Skyline Training Syllabus and FAA WINGS

Many of the training items in this syllabus closely correlate to flight topics in the FAA WINGS Pilot Proficiency Program. When performing currency flights, you may use these two charts to determine which flight activities in the syllabus are required for the FAA WINGS flight activities.

Basic WINGS

Knowledge Activities for Basic WINGS

Attendance of the Skyline Soaring Club annual safety meeting counts for 1 credit for knowledge topic 3. As long as you attend this and get credit from the FAA WINGS representative, that's the easiest way to one-third toward finishing the knowledge topics for your phase of the WINGS program.

Flight Program for Achieving Basic WINGS Program

Option 1:

  1. Go fly with an instructor, doing what would normally be covered in the flight portion of the 61.56 flight review
  2. Get the instructor to sign off the FAA WINGS activity "APT - Glider Student Activity"
  3. The details about what is required for the APT - Glider Student Activity are rather scarce, so it's pretty much up to the instructor.

Option 2:

  1. Fly with an instructor on the first flight (or two) to accomplish these areas of operation:
    • 2A: Before Takeoff Check
    • 2H: Normal and Crosswind Takeoff
    • 2L: Normal and Crosswind Landing
    • 3A: Maintaining Tow Positions (That's high tow and low tow)
    • 4L: Slips to Landing
    • 6B: Abnormal Occurrences (Emergency procedures / rope breaks)
  2. Get the instructor to sign off A070405-25 for your first flight activity.
  3. Fly with an instructor ( and it doesn't have to be the same one as the first time!) to accomplish these areas of operation:
    • 2K: Steep Turns
    • 3D: Minimum Controllable Airspeed
    • 3F: Stall Recognition and Recovery
    • 4C Minimum Sink Airspeed
    • 5B: Ridge Soaring (Basic positioning and safety)
  4. Get the instructor to sign off A070405-26 for this flight activity.
  5. Fly with an instructor to accomplish these areas of operation:
    • 1G / 1H: Ground Handling
    • 2F: Tow Release (Proper clearing and release procedures)
    • 4F: Boxing The Wake
    • 6A: Slack Line (identification and correction)
    • 7C: Assembly (the WINGS credit requires that you actually assemble a glider, so go help assemble the Discus. Just talking about it doesn't count)
  6. Get your instructor to sign off A100125-31

There's nothing that says this has to be three different instructors, and there are no prohibitions on accomplishing some WINGS activities on the same flight.  For instance, you could combine the boxing the wake activity for Basic #3, and also accomplish the "Maintaining Tow Positions" for the Basic #1 -- you could do these on the same flight with the same instructor.  In fact, it makes sense to have a plan of action to cover all of these in one set of training flights.

Advanced WINGS

Knowledge Areas for Achieving Advanced WINGS

Flight Program for Achieving Advanced WINGS Program

First of all, you must have completed the basic phase of WINGS within the last 12 months.  This is the FAA's way of getting you to have more than one set of training per year!   One easy way to get to this point is to get your pilot examiner (DPE) to sign off WINGS credit for the day you got your private pilot certificate. If you've had your certificate for more than 12 months, you'll have to go through the basic program listed above.

Like before, there's nothing that says you have to accomplish the WINGS program in one day, or 3 separate appointments with three different instructors.
